After completing the NZCE in Mechanical Engineering at CPIT (now the Diploma in Engineering, Mechanical), Bloomfield started his own company, Dynamic Composites.
He now applies his knowledge and skills in composite engineering to provide innovative, creative solutions for sport and increased performance for athletes.
"This is done using composite materials like carbon fibre with smart design and manufacturing. We recently built the bikes Sarah Ulmer used to win World and Olympic gold medals and are currently working on single seat gliders, human powered vehicles and light-weight motorbikes.
"The work is exciting, creative and stimulating, and winning awards such as the Steve Gurney Incredible Innovation Award last year keeps me motivated to achieve more."
Bloomfield says following school, he had a year off and then came back to study with new enthusiasm.
"I chose to study the NZCE at CPIT because I was very interested in engineering and the NZCE offered a great balance between practical and theoretical engineering design and analysis."
Bloomfield says he really enjoyed the practical side of the programme. "The content was interesting and relevant to the real world. Getting into the workshops and learning to weld, turn metal and machining skills was so useful, and I still use those skills regularly in my work. A balance between practical skills and theory is very important."
He says the friendly and relaxed teaching style at CPIT was also great. "You get the interaction of a classroom environment but without the `teacher' at the front, like school, and it's far more stimulating than the impersonal lecture-style teaching of universities.
"My most memorable project from the course was building paper bridges. As always, I focused on innovation and my first bridge was banned for being too innovative. The second one, used for assessment, was simple, which is always the best design."
Bloomfield says he uses the knowledge and skills he acquired at CPIT every day to solve problems creatively - whether it be in mechanics, CAD or welding. "It really is a great qualification to have."
